Bertone Mantide based on Corvette -Details and Specifications

Designed by former Pininfarina designer and current Stile Bertone Design Director Jason Castriota, "Mantide," which is the Italian word for Praying Mantis and is pronounced "MAN-tih-dae," will officially debut next week at the Shanghai Motor Show. To generate buzz for the latest project from the famous Italian design house, Bertone brought in production company Kinetic Fin to film a documentary about the design and creation of the Mantide and has been releasing videos and teaser images on their dedicated Web site, YouTube and Twitter.

Castriota, of Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina and Maserati Birdcage fame, promises that the Mantide will be more than just a show car. While no official plans have been announced yet, Castriota describes it as though it could be a turnkey vehicle that could be purchased from Bertone. No pricing has been announced either, but expect a hefty premium to be added to the Corvette ZR1's $106,520 base price for the extensive interior and exterior modifications.

Bertone claims that the Mantide also promises greater performance than the ZR1, due to significant weight savings, achieved through the extensive use of carbon fibre for all body panels, interior trim, seats and even the wheels. The result is that the overall vehicle weight has been reduced by 100 kilos or 220 pounds over the ZR1.

Equipped with the Corvette ZR1's 640Hp supercharged V8, the Mantide sprints from 0 to 62mph (100km/h) in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 351km/h (217mph).
