Working with 4,936 pounds, the lower-trimmed Jeep Commander Sport relies heavily on the standard 3.7-liter, six-cylinder powerplant. Knowing that this engine would be received with deep yawns, Jeep made it possible for serious buyers to adopt either the 4.7-liter V8 or the high-performing 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with 330 (standard on the Overland) horsepower on the Jeep Commander's upper echelon.
The multi-speed, automatic transmission with overdrive, providing a solid, proper gear transitions as you travel over various surface types, comes standard on the Limited and Overland models. The Jeep Commander's 4x4 option, however, is the only way to genuinely declare your Jeep worthy of its seven-slot grille. Assuring that Jeep's “Trail-Rated” image is properly represented, Quadra-Drive 2 is available with a full-time transfer case and an electronically controlled clutch pack that gives the Commander best-in-class traction as it detects tire slip and smoothly redistributes torque to the wheels that do have traction.
The Commander is the largest production Jeep as well as the first to seat seven. Despite its extra size, the Commander still provides the same rugged off-road capability and comfort expected of the Jeep name

Power for the Commander comes from the choice of a V6 or two different V8 engines. The Sport trim starts with a 210-hp 3.7-liter V6, the Limited gets a 290-hp, flex-fuel 4.7-liter V8 (optional on Sport), and the top-of-the-line Overland has a new-for-2009 5.7-liter V8 Hemi (optional on Limited). A five-speed automatic transmission is standard on all Commanders, with two-wheel drive or one of a range of four-wheel drive systems. Standard safety features include all-row side-curtain air bags, front-impact air bags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability control w/roll mitigation and trailer sway control (on models with the tow package.) Standard technology features include Sirius satellite radio and rear parking sensors. Limited and Overland trims include MyGIG entertainment and navigation system with 20-gigabyte hard drive, Boston Accoustic sound system, rear view parking camera, UConnect wireless connectivity,SmartBeam auto-dimming headlights, and memory driver's seat.
For 2009, the Commander's available 5.7-liter V8 has been revised and adds variable valve timing. The Limited adds a navigation system and UConnect wireless connectivity. Overland receives Keyless Go passive entry and new high-intensity headlights. Limited and Overland trims add rear heated seats as standard equipment.
The most important can be found under the hood. Jeep has added the new, second-generation 5.7-litre Hemi V8 to the Commander's engine lineup. Last year, the 4.7-litre “semi-Hemi” Magnum V8 was upgraded with a twin-spark design, raised compression and a couple of other features that allowed it to produce 305 horsepower, up from 230-hp (250 hp in the “High Output” Dakota), a figure that put it uncomfortably close to the 335-hp 5.7-litre Hemi. Correcting this is the revised second generation Hemi (a full Hemi if you're not of the camp that doesn't consider it a 'real' hemi in the first place) that boasts variable valve timing, variable intake manifold and an increased compression ratio. This effectively gives it improved breathing abilities and resultantly higher output. At the same time, these characteristics allow the MDS cylinder deactivation system to operate for longer, improving fuel economy. In total, the new engine makes 357 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque.
