For the first 10 months of this year, Toyota's share of the U.S. market dropped 1.5 percentage points to 15.2 percent, while Honda's declined six-tenths of a point to 10.6 percent. Toyota's massive recall earlier this year certainly had a hand in its slumping sales, say observers, but swiftly rising competitors may also have played a role. Hyundai's mid-size sedan Sonata has emerged as an effective competitor to the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Meanwhile, the Hundai Elantra, at 40 miles per gallon, beats out the Honda Civic (36) and Toyota Corolla (34) while costing $1,500 less. In a bid to recover their green market share, both Toyota and Honda will unveil new battery-powered electric vehicles at this week's Los Angeles auto show.
