An all-new Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV) will join the ranks of law enforcement departments across North America in 2011. It’s a modern, full size, rear-drive sedan that will offer both V-8 and V-6 engine, and a number of special tools and features.

“New Chevrolet Caprice police car is the right tool at the right time for law enforcement,” said Jim Campbell, general manager of GM Fleet and Commercial Operations. “We ask a lot of customer feedback from our police, who helped us develop a superior vehicle than the Crown Victoria in the main field.”

Class-leading spaceCaprice PPV is based on GM’s global rear-drive family vehicle which also supports the Chevy Camaro. He uses the architecture of the longest wheelbase – 118.5 inches (3010 mm) – along with four-wheel independent suspension that gives high performance responsive driving characteristics that are important in some scenarios the police.

PPV long-wheelbase Caprice also contributed to the remarkable flexibility. Compared with the main competition, the benefits include:
A larger interior volume – 112 cubic feet / 3172 liters – the Ford Crown Victoria, including nearly 4 inches (101 mm) more rear legroom
Barrier between the front seats and rear seats are positioned further back, allowing for full front seat travel and recline for greater worker comfort
At the age of 18 cubic feet (535 liters) of free space (outside the battery located in trunk), the Caprice trunk volume large enough to accommodate a full size spare tire under a flat load surface in the storage trunk.

The Caprice’s 6.0-liter V-8 is rated at approximately 355 horsepower (265 kW) with an estimated 384 pounds-ft of torque. This is supported by a six-speed automatic transmission is calibrated to the performance of police duties. Additional, specific powertrain police car and vehicle system features include:
High-output alternator
Engine oil, transmission and power steering cooler
Standard 18-inch steel wheels with bolt-on center caps
Large, four-wheel disc brakes with a heavy duty brake pads
Heavy duty suspension components
Police-calibrated stability control system
Driver information center in instrument cluster with a velocity chosen tracking feature.

A host of complementary features are also offered, including special equipment packages such as spotlights; lockouts for power windows and locks; and “disguised” street-performance package (9C3).

To enable more space for interior equipment, standard radio can be moved to the trunk, allowing for in-dash, touch screen computers that will be used.
