Ferrari originally built 29 FXX cars which were sold to preselected Ferrari owners who will participate in further testing and development. The purchase price of approximately $2,500,000 for each car gives the proud owner a car that they cannot drive on the street and is not homologated for racing. In fact, the FXX prototype is designed exclusively for track driving as part of a specific research program by Ferrari. The purpose of the program is to allow Ferrari's top clients exclusive access to its most current technology and to use their input to help develop future models. The owners have the option of storing their cars at the Ferrari facilities where it will be maintained by the factory. One additional FXX, number 30, was built for presentation to Michael Schumacher when he retired from Ferrari's Formula One racing at the end of 2006. Schumacher's FXX is the only black FXX and is also the only one with no stripe and has red trim on the wheels and matte exhaust tips. It also has the famous Michael Schumacher signature on the side, number 30 on the doors, and his personal insignia on the seats.
