Peugeot 206 CC

he 205, which was launched in 1983, became the definite small Euro hatchback over a 15 year production run that saw over 5 million examples sold. It is widely held that Peugeot management avoided the tricky business of replacing the 205 by simply avoiding the issue. Instead, it launched the tiny 106 City car in 1991 and the bigger 306 in 1993, which was aimed at the lucrative upscale hatchback market dominated by the VW Golf. However, the trusty 205 remained in production after the launch of the 306, and the sales proved that buyers were still very keen on a supermini of this size. However, as the 306 arrived in the showroom, Peugeot turned its attention to finally replacing the ageing 205 with a much more modern car. The new model was a significant investment for Peugeot, as it was a unique model, with no Citroen sister car to help spread the investment load. The 206 was neatly compact and benefitted from a modern interpretation of the 205’s classic pert looks. It was launched in late 1998 and annual sales rocked through the 500,000 barrier, peaking at 707,000 in 2001. Peugeot also rolled production out across the world, with factories in Brazil, Argentina, China, Iran as well as in France.

The company also exploited the 206 chassis by launching a folding roof version, a small estate, a small saloon and a van version. In 2005, it became Peugeot’s bestselling car ever. However, by early 2008, two and a half years after the launch of its 207’replacement’, 206 production had totaled 6.2 million units, with few signs of the little car being pensioned off. Remarkably, Peugeot had managed to replace the 205 with a car that was even more successful.

2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid

America Does It Better

Well-known hybrids like the Toyota Prius or Honda Insight sacrifice a lot to achieve big fuel-sipping numbers. But mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Ford Fusion Hybrid make fewer concessions. They combine an admirable thrift with greater interior space and more standard convenience features. Aimed squarely at family car shoppers who want better economy – but still need a roomy, mid-size car that's comfortable enough for everyday use – the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid ushers in a new era of American fuel efficiency.

Smart gauges

While the conventional Fusion's interior and dash layout won't get mistaken for a luxury car, the Hybrid's equivalent is a few notches above. Only this model gets Ford's SmartGauge LCD instrument panel. The electronic dials and information display are almost as entertaining as they are functional. There are several different modes that help drivers keep tabs on the eco-friendliness (or otherwise) of their motoring habits, as well as a battery charge meter, power output and more typical readouts like a rev counter and an engine temperature gauge. The SmartGauge can even display fuel economy history.

Other than the gauge cluster, the interior is essentially the same as any other Fusion, with a few exceptions. There's a 110-volt power outlet and all seats are covered with an eco-friendly fabric made from post-industrial, 100-percent recycled materials. Up front, those earth-friendly seats are deep and comfortable, and the rear seating area has adequate passenger space. Several useful storage bins make it easy to stash items like a wallet, sunglasses and keys. Ford's voice-controlled Sync system is standard; a Sony sound system, navigation and Sirius Travel Link are available as options.

Badge of quiet pride

It's hard to distinguish a hybrid Fusion from a gas-only model. But there are a few exterior design tweaks that set it apart. Some automakers feel the need to plaster the word "Hybrid" all over their gas/electric vehicles, but the Fusion uses only subtle badging, with a little green leaf on the lower part of both front doors and on the trunk lid. Fusion Hybrids also get 17-inch alloy wheels that are not available on the rest of the range.

The car looks good precisely because it doesn't advertise its presence. Shoppers seeking a standalone hybrid might not like this – they won't get "credit" for their green ways from friends and neighbors. For those who want a hybrid sedan that just gets on with it, the Fusion Hybrid works perfectly.

One more thrill and one more dollar saved

The Fusion Hybrid is rated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at 41 miles per gallon in the city. Hybrids typically do better in this test, because low-speed driving allows the electric motors to take over more often and that means using less gas. With a combined city/highway EPA rating of 39 mpg, the Fusion Hybrid beats the Camry Hybrid for fuel economy, which is estimated to get 33 mpg in combined driving. The combination of gas and electric motors means the Fusion Hybrid is quick off the line, with more muscle left in reserve for passing. The Fusion Hybrid's meager thirst nearly matches that of the smaller Honda Insight. One reason for this is that the Fusion Hybrid can run in electric-only mode at speeds of up to 47 mph. It's possible to "trick" the car into running on just its batteries by lifting off the accelerator and then pushing it again lightly. This is especially easy to do on major boulevards where the speed limit is 35 or 40 mph.

However, Ford engineers haven't focused solely on great economy. The Fusion Hybrid also has excellent driving dynamics. This is largely due to the fact that the base Fusion is nimble and even somewhat fun to drive. The extra weight of hybrid components like batteries and electric motors could squash the fun out of any car, but thankfully, the Fusion Hybrid retains the nimble personality of its gas-only sibling. There's also plenty of power when required. The combination of gas and electric motors means the Fusion Hybrid is quick off the line, with more muscle left in reserve for passing.

Not all hybrids are created equal

There are less expensive hybrids than this Fusion (MSRP: $28,100), but that's hardly the point. Smaller cars like the Honda Insight cost less (from $19,800), but they are less car for the money. The Camry Hybrid is also cheaper ($26,400), but the Fusion Hybrid is more fun to drive and has features like carpeted mats, Bluetooth, voice control for a connected phone and iPod, plus a six-disc CD changer as standard.

One alternative to the Fusion Hybrid comes from Ford's other brand. The Lincoln MKZ is also offered in gas/electric form, but is far more expensive (from $34,225). The most obvious competitor is the Toyota Camry Hybrid, despite a tangible difference between the two. The Fusion is sharper handling and has arguably more style than the Camry. Nissan's Altima Hybrid ($26,780) is a little roomier inside, but, like the Camry Hybrid, falls far short of the Fusion's impressive 41 mpg in the city and 39 mpg combined.

When picking a hybrid, fuel economy is usually a primary concern. Hybrid SUVs may not do much better than 20 miles per gallon or so, but that's pretty good for a large vehicle. Mid-size hybrid sedans should have an EPA estimate in the high 30s at least. The ability to run in all-electric mode is also crucial, because that will net the most fuel savings. Because hybrids are typically more expensive than their non-hybrid counterparts, look for one with a lot of standard features. Big-ticket items like a navigation system will still be optional, but seek out nicer wheels and some upgraded electronics as part of the standard hybrid package.

It's rare to find a car that combines performance, style and great fuel economy so effectively, but that's exactly what the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid does. It's great looking, handles better than most other hybrids, yet delivers when it comes to sipping fuel. For those who actually enjoy driving, but still want the most miles per gallon, the 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid is the best of both worlds. Never before have fun and frugality been blended so well.

Volkswagen is whipping the covers off the 2012 Beetle this week, with simultaneous presentations at the New York and Shanghai auto shows and an invite-only event near VW headquarters in Berlin.

The two-door hatchback, planned for North American sale beginning in September, continues with the retro-inspired appearance of its direct predecessor. The separate fenders have tauter surfacing, crisper feature lines, squarer bumpers, altered detailing and a more rakish roofline.

The look, developed under Volkswagen Group design boss Walter de Silva and VW brand boss Klaus Bischoff, recalls many of the cues revealed on the Ragster concept first wheeled out at the 2005 Detroit auto show.

Among the car's new features are LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlamps and larger wheels--the latter of which can be specified up to 19 inches. At 168.4 inches long, 71.2 inches wide and and 58.5 inches tall, the new Beetle is a considerable 6 inches longer and 3.3 inches wider--but a half-inch lower than the outgoing model, which has accounted for more than 1 million sales globally since its introduction in 1998.

Inside, there's a redesigned dashboard that is said to provide the car with a more conventional driving position. The outgoing Beetle was criticized for its deep dashboard, something that imbued it with an upright, MPV-like driving environment.

In a move that will disappoint the flower power generation, the plastic vase has been deleted in favor of new list of optional extras, including satellite navigation (the first time it has been has been made available on the Beetle), a high-end sound system developed with guitar and amplifier manufacturer Fender, keyless access and a glass roof that is claimed to be 80 percent larger than that offered on the previous model.

The engine lineup will be the 2.5-liter five cylinder making 170 hp, the 2.0-liter TDI diesel (140 hp) and the 2.0-liter four-banger (200 hp). Other variants will be offered around the world.

As with its predecessor, the new Beetle will be assembled at Volkswagen's Puebla plant in Mexico alongside the Jetta, with which it shares elements of its front-engine/front-wheel-drive platform. Along with the coupe revealed here, VW is well advanced on a convertible version, which insiders say is likely to make an appearance at the Los Angeles auto show in November.

VW Beetle nice automobile production

The Volkswagen Type 1, widely known as the Volkswagen Beetle, is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. With over 21 million manufactured  in an air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive configuration, the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured automobile of a single design platform anywhere in the world.

Ford are considering following General Motor’s example and develop their next rear-wheel drive global platform here in Australia.

falcon1.jpg

Australian engineers will develop the drivetrains for the new Mustang as well as Fairlane-based long-wheelbase limousine platforms for the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car which are scheduled to arrive by 2011.

Perhaps most promising of all is that Ford are considering manufacturing these vehicles here in Australia and then exporting them to the Middle-East and parts of Europe. Only a few days ago it seemed Ford Australia were in dire straits, and now their outlook could not be more promising.

Ford Australia boss, Tom Gorman has talked down the proposal, assuring the public that these decisions are still very much in their early stages and nothing is certain.

“We have a fantastic rear-wheel-drive product. The product development team globally understands how strong our product is. We are actively in discussions about that but it is still very, very early days. There have been no decisions made whatsoever.”

He continues by explaining that the discontinuation of the iconic inline-six will further progress Ford Australia toward becoming a more global brand.

“It brings us one step closer to better integrating with Ford’s global product development. The longer that we remain an ‘orphan’ in terms of our technologies in Australia, the less likely we are to fully participate in all the activity that’s under way in rear-wheel-drive.”

The new global Ford 3.5-litre V6 which is to replace the inline-six will be introduced on the Falcon in 2010. In base form, the engine produces roughly 196kW of power but a twin-turbo performance version could produce 309kW of power and 542Nm of torque. Ford says the twin-turbo can combine V8 performance with V6 fuel consumption.

The plans also stipulate that the Mustang may be engineered and sold locally which – if approved – will be the fastest car Ford Australia has released, powered by a 309kW twin-turbo V6.

All petty rivalries aside, both Ford and Holden Australia are doing us proud by producing vehicles of global quality as well as increasing global recognition of our capabilities in both manufacturing and engineering.
