In 1987 the same platform was used for a sixth-generation model which adopted taller, rounded styling. This generation won the Car of the Year Japan award in 1987 and the GS model became Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year in 1989.[6] This Galant began American sales in 1989 side by side with the Sigma.

The Sigma designation disappeared with the 1990 model. A new hardtop liftback model was added in 1988, called the Mitsubishi Eterna. This generation was also sold in Canada as the Dodge 2000GTX and Eagle 2000GTX. Sales ended in 1992.

A limited edition based on the GTi-16v model was introduced in 1989, modified by German tuning company AMG (now owned by Mercedes-Benz),with mildly uprated engine (172PS) and unique bodykit, alloy wheels & leather interior.

The sixth generation was also the first to see the introduction of the VR-4 variant, which was the basis for Mitsubishi's participation in the 1988–1992 World Rally Championships. The Galant's 4G63 two litre DOHC turbocharged engine and 4WD transmission was later adopted for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with little modification, and would remain in production for fifteen years.

A fifth-generation model shifted to front-wheel drive for 1983 as a four-door sedan and hardtop (with different styling). This formed the basis of the widened Mitsubishi Magna in Australia for 1985, the same year in which Mitsubishi won Bild am Sonntag's Das Goldene Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel) award in Germany for the Galant and Wheels’ Car of the Year for the Magna.[5] This generation was also sold in the United States and New Zealand as the Mitsubishi Sigma until 1990.

Export trim levels were often engine-specific, depending on the market: GL models were offered with either 1.6L or 1.8L engines, GLS models (GLX on certain markets) had 2.0-litre engines (badged 2000 GLS) and Diesel versions had a 1.8-litre turbodiesel engine. The diesel model did not have a trim level, it was simply 1800 TD.

Mitsubishi's fourth iteration of the Galant/Sigma debuted many new innovations for Mitsubishi. Their new 'Sirius' engine was offered in turbocharged form for performance enthusiasts, while for economy, an 'Astron' 4D55, the first diesel engine in a Japanese passenger car, was also available. A new electronic fuel injection system was introduced on some models of the gasoline Astron, while only the carburetted version was offered in the United States.

For the second generation in a row Mitsubishi could claim to be building an award-winning car, as this was chosen as Car of the Year in New Zealand in 1981.

From 1982 to 1983, some of the Australian Sigmas were exported to the United Kingdom with the Lonsdale badge, circumventing the voluntary import quota restrictions adopted by Japanese manufacturers. However the car was unsuccessful, and for 1983 and 1984 it carried Mitsubishi Sigma badges in the UK before imports were discontinued.

The wagon version was facelifted, although from firewall back the vehicle remained the same. Production of the wagon version continued in Australia until 1987 when it was replaced by the new Magna.

The two door coupé was also redesigned for 1981 and was sold through 1983. The fourth generation was known as the Mitsubishi Scorpion in Australia, and the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Sapporo in the United States.

The fourth generation sedan and coupé were both slightly larger than the third generation cars. Additional emphasis was given to ergonomics, aerodynamics, and safety. Shoulder room, leg room, and head space were all increased, and the trunk was slightly enlarged for more luggage capacity. The interior was made quieter with additional carpeting and other acoustic dampening materials and a double-thickness front bulkhead.

The third-generation of the car was introduced in 1976, and was known in Japan as the Galant Λ (Lambda) two door coupé, or the Galant Σ (Sigma) four door sedan. In many export markets the Sigma was simply known as the Galant, while the Dodge Colt name continued in America. A wagon variant was available to complement the sedan. In Australia, where the car was built locally at Chrysler's Clovelly Park plant, it was known as the Chrysler Sigma.

The new coupé (Galant Λ) was sold in Australia as the Chrysler Scorpion. In the United States, it was sold as the Dodge Challenger and the Plymouth Sapporo, beginning in 1978. A turbocharged version of the coupé was called the Galant 2000 GSR and was intended to replace the Galant GTO.

Mitsubishi introduced the MCA-Jet engine with its latest Galant. This incorporated the "Jet Valve", a secondary intake valve which improved emissions without necessitating the need for a completely redesigned cylinder head.

The third generation Galant was the recipient of the Car of the Year award in South Africa in 1977.[4]

Mercedes McLaren SLR Production 2

At the McLaren Technology Centre, advanced materials from the aerospace and F1 are used for the first time in the series production of the body and chassis. The SLR's doors, bonnet and complete BIW are made from carbon-fibre composites (CFCs). Previously, CFC components were built by hand in a time-consuming process. In order to achieve a high degree of automation, McLaren worked with the Mercedes-Benz Technology Center in Sindelfingen to divide the production process into a 'preform' stage and a resin saturation stage followed by the hardening phase. Traditional textile processes such as stitching, knitting, weaving and braiding were adapted for the production of high-performance CFC fibers.

The longitudinal members of the front body structure consist of a central cross member and the encircling moulded part or internal web. The cross member comprises several layers of carbon fiber stitched together by a machine. After the form has been cut to shape, the web blank is inserted into a braided polystyrene core. This core element is then clamped into a specially developed braiding machine that produces the longitudinal member from 25,000 ultra-fine carbon filaments unwound simultaneously from 48 reels. This process allows the fibers to be braided around the core at a precisely defined angle to create the desired contour. Several layers are overlapped in certain areas, depending on the thickness required.

In an additional process, a computer-controlled tufting machine (as used in the textiles industry) joins the cross member to the braid of the longitudinal member. The braid core is removed and the preform of the longitudinal member is cut to the correct size. The preform is then injected with resin. A cycle time of just 12 minutes is required to manufacture the complex fiber structure of the longitudinal members using a braiding machine. This illustrates the potential production capacity that this innovative manufacturing technology offers for the future.

The rear shelf structure of the SLR further illustrates the new production techniques used for carbon-fibre processing. Despite being a very complex shape with several apertures, it is automatically manufactured as a single component. To achieve this, Mercedes-Benz and its partners adapted the Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) method to create 'Advanced SMC'. The key advantage is that the carbon fibre mats are no longer manufactured by hand but by machine. Here, a handling system positions individual CFC layers at precalculated angles and in preset positions which correspond to the principal shape of the component, thereby creating the blank. Under heat this blank is then pressed, and in the process it takes on the precisely calculated form of the rear shelf. No subsequent reworking is therefore required
McLaren Composites also manufactures over 50 carbon fibre components for the car. The entire floor assembly, including all support members and securing elements, is made from one piece. The core of the carbon fibre composite roof frame structure (also manufactured as a single piece) is automatically filled with foam before the resin injection, creating a crash-resistant sandwich structure. High-strength bonding and riveting techniques ensure a reliable connection between the individual components of the chassis and the bodyshell. The aluminum engine mounts are bolted to the carbon fibre composite bulkhead and also bonded in place. The carbon structure includes integral mountings for the aluminum and steel rear axle.

Mercedes McLaren SLR Production

Production of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England, utlises both the advanced production systems of Mercedes and the sports car manufacturing expertise of McLaren.
Around 140 highly qualified staff manufacture up to 500 units of the Gran Turismo at the McLaren Technology Centre, McLaren's HQ, each year. During the vehicle's seven-year lifespan, the plant is intended to produce 3,500 cars. In total, the McLaren Technology Centre measures approximately 22,500 square metres, 4000 of which are utilised for SLR production.

The centre also houses the Team McLaren Mercedes' Formula 1 activities. Three of the seven production wings in the building complex are dedicated to the painting and final assembly of the SLR. The remaining four production wings are occupied by Team McLaren Mercedes Formula 1, McLaren Electronic Systems, McLaren Marketing and McLaren Applied Technologies.
The 460-kW/626-hp V8 engine comes from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in Affalterbach, while the specialists from McLaren Composites in Portsmouth deliver the carbon fiber body-in-white. The McLaren Technology Centre is the hub of production where all components are brought together and assembled and where final stages of production and testing take place.
The bodies-in-white are shipped to Woking from Portsmouth, around 100 km away. In the paint shop, which is located opposite the final assembly hall, the carbon fiber surface is painted by means of a special process. The final assembly of the SLR is mostly done by hand and takes place at nine stations along an 80m production line. Each step is carried out in keeping with the standards and processes of the 'Mercedes-Benz Production System', which was adapted to take into account the special circumstances of the SLR.

Before moving on to the next station, each vehicle must pass a 'quality gate', to ensure high and consistent standards. Following
the assembly process, each vehicle undergoes a final test on the rolling test rig as well as driving tests used to fine-tune the chassis.

The production process for the SLR was thoroughly tested and optimized even before series production was launched. To prepare the employees for the special requirements associated with this particular series production run, the production technicians made the SLR prototypes as well.

Volvo S60 Concept



The Volvo S60 Concept is a design study that previews the production model scheduled for 2010 and gives indication of the future brand's formal language. The design features pronounced coupe-inspired lines and a futuristic interior


Debuting at the Detroit Motor Show in early January 2009, Volvo S60 Concept previews the production version of the all-new S60 which will be introduced in 2010.

The first-generation Volvo S60 was launched in 2000 and was profiled as a coupe with four doors. The car's sporty nature has made the S60 one of Volvo Cars' most global models.

The coupe-inspired lines of the original S60 are even more pronounced in the next generation.

The Volvo S60 Concept is powered by a four-cylinder 1.6-litre gasoline unit using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and producing 180 horsepower. Combined with a range of other technical measures it allows to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km (5.0 l/100 km).

Exterior Design

Volvo S60 ConceptThe concept car gives a clear indication that the Volvo Cars design team is stepping up to the next level in the development of the products' DNA.

"The modern Scandinavian design of the S60 Concept reflects the "Do Not Abandon" approach to the strengths of the brand's design language.

"At the same time, it's a Dramatic New Approach. A refined balance of tradition and new, dynamic visual excitement," says Volvo Cars' design director Steve Mattin.

He adds: "The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring - there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future in the slightly longer perspective."

The front of the S60 Concept naturally sports the enlarged iron mark in the trapezoidal grille. The 3D Volvo letters in the iron mark are embedded in an illuminated panel. The grille itself has a somewhat new appearance with structured horizontal vanes adding refinement to its form.

Two DNA lamps flank the grill. They emphasise the vertical stance of the front and promote the bonnet's V-shape. The DNA lamps also become the starting points of the fresh sculptural design language of the bumpers.

Volvo S60 ConceptThe angled headlamps flow up into the strongly sculptured bonnet. Combined with the lower air intake's reverse trapezoidal shape, this gives the concept car a very expressive "face".

"Dynamic and with considerable character, but without appearing aggressive. This car is packed with inspiration from Scandinavian design and from the Swedish coastline's cliffs and seas. A thrilling blend of drama and sensuality," says Steve Mattin.

Viking longboats in the headlamps

The concept car's headlamps unite classic Scandinavian influences with modern high-tech.

In each of the headlamps, the lights form a sculpture creating the image of two miniature Viking longboats sailing side by side, one for main beam and one for dipped beam.

When driving in the dark, the light is reflected from the concealed, upward-facing High Performance LED bulbs, projected ahead by the ships' filled sails.

A closer look reveals a number of specially designed details. The compact cooling system for the LED bulbs has protruding cooling blocks made out of aluminium, semi-visible under the ships' hulls.

The design creates "the illusion of shimmering glass panels that float above a dark and mysterious Scandinavian sea". The semi-transparent housing incorporates a layered ring-like formation that is part of the position lights. "You can see the confident face of the concept car illuminating in a ring-like formation."

The transparent attachment of the door mirrors illuminates fully and becomes part of the indicator function. The panorama roof is another ingredient that contributes to the concept car's airy Scandinavian aura.

"The unique livery in "Warm Liquid Copper" enhances the richness of the S60 Concept's body surfacing, adding a feeling of depth and exclusivity. The colour also links to Sweden's rich copper mining history," says Steve Mattin.

Viewed from the side, the concept car's slim coupe roofline and window graphics are accompanied by an entirely new lateral shoulder line, forming a gentle double wave. Stretching from the headlamps all the way to the tail, it adds emotional excitement and plays with the surface and its highlights.

Door opening is initiated by pressing on a button and the movement starts off in the traditional way. In the next phase, the forward section also swings out away from the car's body and the door glides parallel with the side of the car until it reaches its end position by the rear wheel.

Since the car does not have a B-pillar between the front and rear seats, this door configuration offers exceptionally generous entry and exit access.

Both the seven-spoke 20-inch wheels and the tread of the low-profile tyres have been specially designed. The bronze-painted brake callipers match the car's paintwork and accentuate the concept car's muscular, sporty looks.

Inspiration from the racing track

The car's lines do not end abruptly but instead forge a continuous flowing pattern inspired by the fast sweeps of the racing track. In the concept car, this is particularly visible at the rear," says Steve Mattin.

The tail lamps, which follow the curve of the rear shoulders, are as advanced as the headlamps up front. When switched off, the lamp panels show no trace of the traditional red or yellow associated with rear lights.

But when activated, the position marker lights, brake lights and turn indicators come on in their correct colours with the help of LED bulbs.

The lighting system's solid glass panel is sectioned into horizontal "slices" that create the visual impression of a three-dimensional architect drawing when the lights come on.

At the rear there is also a retractable diffuser that adjusts with vehicle speed to give better aerodynamic properties.

"You could say that we are showing the road we would like to take in the future. This interior is without doubt the most exclusive we have ever created," says Steve Mattin.

When the parallelogram doors finish their high-tech display, they reveal an interior packed with exciting details, all of which together create a Scandinavian fresh light feeling, full of visual harmony.

In the middle of the four-seater car glitters the jewel in the crown: a floating centre stack crafted from handmade, solid Orrefors crystal.

"It resembles a waterfall that flows down from the instrument panel and then courses along the middle of the car's interior," says Steve Mattin.

The entire driver's environment has been designed to provide total overview and control. The driver is backed up by logical instruments, easily accessible controls and sophisticated technology that monitors the surrounding traffic, ready to alert the driver in the event of danger.

The combined instrument is similar in design to the unit in the Volvo XC60 Concept. It resembles a bumble-bee with a round speedometer as the "body" flanked by two digital "wings" providing all the other information.

The low numbers appear closest to the eye and the figures appear to be increasingly distant as you accelerate. The idea is that the speedometer should provide a visual reminder of the force of the forward motion," explains Steve Mattin.

The combined instrument too has the centre stack's floating, almost weightless feel about it.

The instrument is built up in several layers. In the gaps between the layers concealed vents contribute to better airflow inside the cabin.

Here too there is a link to the exterior's "racetrack" theme in the form of the unbroken line around the instrument. A copper frame matches the concept car's paintwork.

Above the combined instrument, the driver receives information and alerts from the preventive safety systems via the windscreen's head-up display. Information from the car's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) is integrated in the A-pillars.

Mercedes-Benz BlueZero Concept

The BlueZero is a 5-seater concept vehicle based on a sandwich-floor architecture with a modular layout that allows three different drive configurations: pure electric, fuel cell and hybrid powertrain.

Scheduled to debut at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show, the BlueZero is defined by Mercedes-Benz as a near-series vehicle.

In 2009, the first fuel-cell cars will be produced on a small scale, while the battery-electric drive models will be introduced in 2010.

The three BlueZERO variants are based on the unique sandwich-floor architecture which Mercedes-Benz introduced some ten years ago, initially for the A-Class and then for the B-Class, one of the aims being to integrate alternative drive systems.

This layout ensures a raised sitting position, a high level of crash safety for the passengers and excellent all-round visibility.

At the same time the powertrain technology is built into the sandwich floor, between the axles, so that the interior space is retained in full, and the centre of gravity is kept low.

Based on a single vehicle architecture, the modular concept allows three different drive configurations:

  • the BlueZERO E-CELL with battery-electric drive and a range of up to 200 kilometres using electric drive alone
  • the BlueZERO F-CELL (fuel cell) with a range of well over 400 kilometres using electric drive
  • the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with electric drive and additional internal combustion engine as power generator (range extender).

This last version has an overall range of up to 600 kilometres and can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometres using electric drive alone.

All three BlueZERO variants share the same key technical components, while the design and vehicle dimensions are identical.

Advantages of the modified construction include the positive effect of the major drive components on the centre of gravity, their space-saving design and the fact that they are extremely well protected within the vehicle underbody.

Design

Measuring just 4.22 metres in length, the BlueZERO models combine compact exterior dimensions with a generously proportioned and variable interior and luggage compartment.

Five fully-fledged seats, a payload of around 450 kilograms and a luggage compartment capacity of over 500 litres make for outstanding everyday practicality.

The unique and distinctive Mercedes design idiom displayed by the body highlights the progressive nature of Concept BlueZERO straight away.

The front end is dominated by the radiator grille with its centrally located star. The excellent aerodynamics of the BlueZERO are partly due to the closed front apron, whose design means that cooling air intakes are not required.

The 20-inch wheels have also been aerodynamically optimised, while low-friction tyres reduce rolling resistance.

The striking character lines along the flanks lend the BlueZERO an extremely dynamic side line and accentuate its bionic structure inspired by nature.

The compact rear end is characterised by tail lights in the shape of a curved "L".

In addition, the Mercedes designers have achieved a new-quality light production: transparent lenses produce a red light curtain which tapers smoothly towards the sides, creating a lightly diffused effect.

This effect is repeated, albeit in white this time, by the front headlamps. What's more, the front lights feature new lens technology and a plexiglass edge to produce "C" shaped daytime driving lights with the help of state-of-the-art LED technology.

Translucent surfaces make the normally concealed technology visible. The light-grey tailgate is made completely from lightweight but highly robust Lexan that allows a view of the aluminium structure that makes up the rigidifying frame, for example.

At the same time this transparent tailgate provides a view of the vehicle interior, making the advantages of the sandwich-floor platform obvious at a glance: for maximum customer benefit, the luggage compartment and passenger area remain fully usable, since there are no technical components that need to be accommodated here.

"It was very important for us to ensure that the guiding Mercedes-Benz principle of 'Fascination and Responsibility' was clearly reflected in the design of the Concept BlueZERO", says Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener.

"This is yet another clear statement that environmental awareness and driving pleasure will continue to go together in our vehicles in the future. We want people to realise at first sight that the Concept BlueZERO is definitively not a lesser option."

The Mercedes-Benz designers have emphasised this aspiration by introducing paint finishes in three new ALU-BEAM colours. Each of the three variants makes its individual mark: the BlueZERO E-CELL is painted in a fresh ALU-BEAM Yellow, while the BlueZERO F-CELL has ALU-BEAM Green paintwork. Confidence-oozing ALU-BEAM Orange was chosen for the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS.

Modular design

"Our modular system allows different drive configurations for every customer requirement", says Dr Thomas Weber, the member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"The modified sandwich-floor platform provides the perfect basis for a wide model range with electric drive systems. We are also developing a new, additional platform for future compact models with power units based on optimised internal combustion engines."

Compared to electric cars based on conventional vehicle platforms and originally only designed for use in combination with internal combustion engines, Concept BlueZERO offers the following conclusive advantages:

  • Interior space is retained in full. As the energy accumulators/generators are integrated into the spacious sandwich floor, no compromises are necessary when it comes to passenger space, luggage capacity or variability.
  • The powertrain technology built into the sandwich floor ensures a low centre of gravity and, consequently, reliable and agile handling.
  • Crash safety is of the extremely high standard associated with Mercedes thanks to the sandwich concept and the housing of major powertrain components between the axles.

Technical Features

All three BlueZERO models feature front-wheel drive, which is typical for this class of car. The Mercedes engineers have put together a modular system comprising several flexibly combinable drive components.

These include liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of up to 35 kWh and the compact electric motor with a maximum output of 100 kW (continuous output 70 kW), which develops a peak torque of 320 Nm.

All three variants accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. Their top speed is electronically limited to 150 km/h in the interests of optimal range and energy efficiency.

With a charging capacity of 15 kW, the powerful lithium-ion batteries in the BlueZERO E-CELL and the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS can store enough energy for a range of 50 kilometres within 30 minutes.

In terms of purely electrical drive, one or two hours of charging time is needed for a range of 100 and 200 kilometres respectively. The charging times are doubled if the charging capacity is 7 kW, as would be the case in a normal household. Both of these BlueZERO vehicles incorporate an electronic control unit that supports intelligent charging stations and billing systems.

At the rear, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS has the same 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the smart fortwo as an additional range extender.

This compact three-cylinder powerplant has an output of 50 kW at a constant 3500 rpm. If required, it can recharge the 17.5-kWh lithium-ion battery by means of a similarly rated alternator.

A range of up to 600 kilometres is possible on a single tank. The purely electrical, locally emission-free range is up to 100 kilometres. The BlueZERO F-CELL with fuel-cell drive achieves a range of well over 400 kilometres with zero emissions (as per NEDC).

Subaru Legacy Concept preview

Subaru has revealed the first image of the Legacy Concept, that will be unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show and will showcase the design direction for the future Legacy sedan model, which celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Celebrating 20 years of the Legacy sedan, the Legacy Concept is characterized by a sporty look which underlines the dynamic powertrain, which features a 3.6-liter, low center of gravity Horizontally-Opposed engine and the brand's symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.

Exterior design elements include a distinctive front face and flared wheel arches. The interior embodies high definition with a feeling of comfort.
